Lion Vickie reported that the vision committee has reviewed three applications.
They are recommending $150 on each of the three. Moved by Lion Guy and seconced
by Lion Bill to fund all three requests. Motion carried.
Karen Boysen submitted a letter of resignation. She can no longer devote the
time to the club.
Lion Earl looked into the Harlem Ambassador proposal. It requires 20 businesses
to donate $200 each. It was moved by Lion Kevin and seconded by Lion Jerry to
turn down the proposal. Motion carried.
Lottery: Lion Brian has been working on the letter to the corporate sponsors
and received some clarification from the club. Lion Brian suggested that we
have a dance after the banquet, since his band equipment will be here anyway.
We would have to pay the three other band members $100 each for a total of $300.
Lion Bill moved and Lion Earl seconded that we hire Lion Brian's band for the
banquet. Motion carried.
President Lafler circulated a request from a college of optometry for a donation
to assist them to take glasses to Mexico. Lion Alan moved and Lion Guy seconded
to donate $50. Motion carried.
Mimi Roller presented a request from the Good Samaritan Society for lottery
funds. They need to renovate their bathing rooms to include walk-in bathtubs.
The overall cost of the project will be about $125K. The tubs alone cost $16K.
Lion Wilma reported that she has restored the Lion again. She as asked the museum
if they'd like to store it for us.

Joan Dockins made a presentation on behalf of the Carnegie Arts Center for lottery
funds in the amount of about $480. They would use the money to buy frames for
art created in an eight week Adventures workshop for children.
District Governor Barney Ownes addressed the club. His home in Elwood is 282
miles away. He reminded the club about the foundation cabinet meeting in Fremont
Saturday.

week, we will hear a presentation from the Sallows botanical garden.

Lion Lori asked about whether we budgeted to get horses to Camp Kaleo. Treasurer
Danbom indicated that we budgeted $400.
Lion Bill displayed two music bags donated by Karen Boysen for prizes for our

to give $50 for first place and $25 for second prize, and $15 for third prize.

open th, F & Sat.; budgeted for $5000 dues which are not affordable for
about half of the 100 youth members.; asking for $1000 to be used for
computers to help with kids homework.
Roger Applegarth of 4H shooting club; asking for computer software which will
enable instructors to see what the student sees ($1400); 35-40 students aged
8-17.
Adrian Gonzales on Spartan Baseball program; need a newer van and have raised
over $4000 of about $7000 needed. The van enables all the boys to travel together
instead of requiring parents to drive. Asking for $1000 towards the van and
$1000 for two sets of catchers gear.
Dan Anderson for the Archery Club; youth program is done at no costs to the
kids. They need at least two more bows ($110 each), several dozen arrows at
$30 per doz., and five or more targets for a total of $400 - $500.
Lion president read a letter from Bev Twogood of the Alliance After School Program.
They have about 200 students and need money for equipment
Lion Harold was the 50-50 winner which brought about the suggestion that he
should only be allowed to win one drawing on the same day.
Lion Alan gave the treasurer’s report.
KCOW Station Manager Mike Fell informed the club that they are donating a booth
for the Lions at the Home Show.

on Saturday, 36 on Sunday.
Dog park discussion: We were asked to sponsor the dog park. We need to respond.

to find people to volunteer raise leader dog puppies. We budget $150 to donate
to this program annually and he is requesting an increased donation. Moved by
Lion Jerry and seconded by Lion Mary to increase our donation to leader dogs
by $70. Tabled. Lion Alan will call him and ask about it.
Sight committee: Need a new eyeglass donation box at Dr. Dietrich’s. Lion
Kevin will order them.
Lion Kevin moved and Lion Bill seconded to fine Lion Earl for accepting the
Tail Twister appointment then missing the meeting. Lion Guy offered an amendment
to fine Lion Kevin for being Lion Earl’s boss and causing him to miss
the meeting by signing his travel request. Lion Kevin did not accept the amendment.

President Lafler inducted new member, Rachel Gonzalez.
Treasurer Danbom moved and Lion Earl seconded to contribute $150 (annual donation)
+$70 (requested increase) to seeing eye dog program per the discussion tabled
from next week.
Treasurer Danbom presented a treasurer’s report. Moved by Lion Vickie
and seconded by Lion Bill to approve as presented. Motion carried.
Lion Earl announced that the local FFA marketing students who presented a couple
of weeks ago won the state competition.
Lion Howard indicated that the Times-Herald still has our meeting date as Monday.
President Lafler will look into it.
Fireworks committee will meet immediately following this meeting to discuss
this year’s order.
Lion Vickie reported that we have received only two scholarship apps so far.
She expects a flood of apps next week.
Super Wowie-Zowie committee: The machine needs emptied.
Lion Alan reported that the Mobile Screening Unit will be in Crawford on April
18th, 9:AM to 4:PM. He will man it for us, as well as staff from the Panhandle
Public Health district.
Lion Harry and the food committee reported on the status of the arrangements
for the banquet. Planning is proceeding on schedule.
Lion Harry showed a photo of Lion Brion from National Postmasters Magazine.
Lion Larry reported that the prize committee needs the bills on the prizes so
they can be paid.

Past President Earl Jones called the meeting to order at 12:10 p.m. He led the pledge and offered the invocation.
It was moved by Lion Steve and seconded by Lion Guy to fine Lion Kevin the maximum for not lining up a substitute secretary and for his webmaster attacks on "the gracious tail twister". The motions passed unanimously.
Lion Vickie reported income of almost $400 from the gum ball machines.
Lion Alan reported that as of today, 178 sold Lottery tickets have been turned in.

Report of 4.15.09 Fireworks CommitteeThe Alliance Lions fireworks committee
met at Harold Roller’s to organize for the 2009 sale. Present were
Lions Harold Roller, Wally Kirchhoff, Jerry Iossi, and Bill Graham.The group
prepared the purchase order, reducing the amounts of items that were discounted
during the 2008 sales and increasing items which sold out early. This
years order is estimated at $4782. About $50 worth of fireworks has been
carried over from last year. The 2008 order was $3536 (with about $500
carried over from 2007). Most items are ten or twelve percent higher
than last year.

5. BUSINESS:
Lion Vicki worked her duties as tail twister for the club.
The Indian Council has requested our club sponsorship for the use of the Lions
Mobile Screening Unit at the annual pow wow to be held at Fort Robinson in June
of 2009. The Indian Council will cover all expenses. Lion Alan Danbom has volunteered
to attend to represent the club. Motion by Lion Wally, seconded by Lion Jerry
to sponsor the Unit, discussion, motion carried.
President Lion Brian read a letter of request from the Nebraska Lions Foundation
to share in the expense of necessary equipment purchases for the new Mobile
Screening Unit. The request was discussed but it was decided to table the request
until after the Lions lottery fund raiser.
A report from the Fireworks committee was presented by Lion Harold about the
fireworks order. A possible “demonstration” of the products was
discussed, so that Lions would have an idea what they were selling.
A report from the Lions Lottery prize committee was presented by Lion Bev. It
was suggested that we honor those sponsors who donated the cost of their entire
prizes be recognized. The committee would make sure they were recognized in
the final flyer.
A report from the Scholarship committee was presented. The committee would be
meeting soon to review applicants.

thank you for purchasing two baskets for their Easter egg hunt. NE Lions Foundation
Peach sales drive. Must notify them by July 1 if we’re going to do it.
Update on Lion Brian. Is getting a second opinion. Headed to Denver.
Lion Kevin will be gone next week and asked for a volunteer to take minutes.
Lion Vickie will do it.

Earl Jones as acting president in Lion Brian absence. Motion carried.
Scholarship Committee: Will have it all sorted out before the banquet.
Lion Earl will contact the lottery beneficiaries to invite them to the banquet.
Lion Larry reminded members to deliver the prize if you sold the ticket.
Lion Bill indicated that Br. Mink will take the any leftover food that the Sisters
don’t need.

Lion Brian has met with the surgeon. He will have two surgeons. Will go back
next week. Cancer is confined to esophogus.

Lion Alan found the last 3 tickest and the $300.
Raffle profit $2051.10. Carry over from last year $1181.00 Moved by Lion Alan
and seconded by lion Vickie to put $2051.10 into Lions Park. Motion carried.
Lion Larry indicated that two years ago Nancy Leisey won one of our a prizes
from Randy Garrett. He put her off and he never paid up.
Lion Larry indicated that it is time for us to organize a trash pick up. He
will look at a calendar and propose a date.
We need to follow up on membership invitations to Gina Briggs and Mike Fell.
Lion Bill indicated that we’ve been asked to host the 2011 State Convention
the first week of June. Acting president Earl Jones asked Lions Alan and Bill
to list all the stuff we would have to organize. We will discuss it further
at that time. If it’s going to happen, it can’t be the first of
June because the car show is always that weekend.

Lion Earl reported that Lion Brian phoned with an update. The cancer is in his
lymph nodes and they have to do chemo and radiation before doing surgery. Need

Lion Earl introduced Rachel Thomas and sons, Issac and Amon. Rachel attended
to request us to sponsor her son in Horspice.
Discussion: Whether to sponsor state convention early in June 2011. Would put
together lunches and evening meals and several meetings. We need to find out
whether they will change the date not to conflict with the 385 Cruisers car
show. Moved by Lion Guy and seconded by Lion Jerry to decline. Motion failed.
Lion Bill will look into it more.
Guest Rachel Thomas presented a request for us to sponsor son Isaac at Horspice,
and include Amon as well. Sessions are $20 each for ten weeks.
Deb Hagler asked for sponsorship for her daughter Stephanie to enroll in Horspice
as well.
Moved by Lion Alan and seconded by Lion Guy to sponsor Isaac Thomas, Amon Thomas,
and Stephanie Hagler at Horspice for 10 sessions. Motion carried.
Lion Bill reported that special olympic atheletes were screened for vision in
an Opening Eyes event in Omaha.

• Lion President stand-in/Elect Earl read several thank you’s from
scholarship recipients, along with a letter from the Box Butte County Sheriff’s
Office thanking us for the funds from the lottery and sending us a check for
$800.00. Lion Alan moved, Lion Guy second to put the funds into the activity
account. Some discussion followed. Passed
• There is approximately $5200 in the activity fund so we could purchase
some playground equipment.
• Lion Vickie read a letter from person wanting help on cataract surgery.
She declined to go to the doctor for his assessment as she did not want to start
something she may not finish. Club advised Lion Vickie to call her and let her
know we cannot pursue any financial aid without the doctors input.
• Lion Earl read a letter from Highland Park requesting equine therapy
for a gent who lives at Highland Park, and one from another person for the same.
Lion Guy moved Lion Wally second that we tell them we are out of funds. Discussion
followed that we need to set guide lines on the equine therapy so that it does
not get out of control. Passed. Lion Earl will advise Buckboard Therapy that
we are assisting people in Box Butte county this year. It was mentioned that
we should have an application for this as well as eye assistance. Lion Vickie
will work on that. Lion Guy will visit with the horspice people here and tell
them we are working on it and will also find out how many people they foresee
having.
• Lion Earl got a call from Carhenge asking for donation to help with
their Heritage Days race. Lion Alan moved, second by Lion Jerry to not donate.
Passed.
• Lion Kathy made a sign up sheet for selling fireworks.
• Lion Vickie moved, second by Lion Harold to fine Lion Kevin the MAXIMUM
for not lining up a secretary……….NO DISCUSSION. Passed, with
one dissenting vote from Lion Calvin (suckup) Tolstedt.
• Discussion on the white elephant auction at installation. No, unless
you have something you want to bring, but admin fund is pretty good. Maybe in
a couple of years.
• Lion Bill will email Lion Segar to see if he’ll come out and do
our installation. Lion Kathy will be sure he gets it done.
• Lion Bill talked about State Convention. He received the International
President Leadership Medal. Received a very loud and resounding ROAR from the
club.

Lion Guy has talked with Brian Stephenson about the horspice requests. They
agreed that it would be a good idea to develop a form that we could use next
year.
Update on Lion Brian: Has a catheter for the chemotherapy and blood draws. Is
home from the catheter surgery now. Has a pump to administer the chemo at home.
Has to go to SB for daily radiation treatments.
Treasurer Danbom presented the monthly financial report. Approved as presented.

The picnic and officer installation is next Wednesday 6:00 p.m. at the shelter
house in Central park. Lion Bill was fined double for not having contacted Acting
District Governor Larry Seger about joining us.

Jones, Mrs. Kirchhoff, Mrs. Watson, Mr. Stravopolous, Mr. Roller.
Business:
Lion Earl asked members to please sign up for several shifts to sell fireworks.
Correspondence from Gregory’s Insurance: Our carrier will offer only liability
insurance on our fireworks trailer beginning in 2010. Our insurance agent recommends
that since the trailer is so old we should self-insure it and purchase liability
insurance only.
Correspondence from the Chamber of Commerce: They asked us to help sponsor the
Harlem Ambassadors basketball team. Moved by Danbom and seconded by G. Hielscher
to decline. Motion carried.
There has been equipment and graffiti damage to Lions park. It needs some attention
to get it back into shape.

Lion Guy indicated that some club members are permitting small children who
are not related to members into the fireworks booth. This is not permitted.
Moved by Lion Sharron and seconded by Lion Alan to permit family members only.
Motion carried.
Heritage days parade: Moved by Lion Steve and seconded by Lion Jerry to have
a float in the parade. Motion carried. Lion Jerry will sign us up.
Camp Kaleo: Moved by Lion Earl and seconded by Lion Guy to give $140 to Stephensons
to take horses to this year’s camp. Motion carried.
Today's 50:50 drawing: $6 to Lion Jerry.
Fireworks report: Lion Bill passed around the sign up sheets again. Need second
workers for Friday and Saturday shifts.
Lion Alan indicated that we need to secure permits for the raffle and will do
so for the next two years. They will be on May 14, 2010 and May 13, 2011.
Request from NE Lions Foundation asking for help with expenses with the Mobile
Screening Unit. Lion Alan feels we can give them $200. Lion Steve moved and
Lion Vickie seconded that we give $500. Motion carried.
Annual budget meeting: Wednesday night, July 22 7:00 PM at Earl’s house
808 Cheyenne.
Lion Bill asked Lion Dan Hoesing about the Laurel Leo’s club. It has 70
members at the junior high. The school paid the memberships out of drug free
money. Staff members are sponsors.

Parade: Lion Jerry will get Lion Steve’s trailer on which to put the lion.
Lion Jerry will pull the trailer with a Cover-Jones pickup and will use the
magentic decals.
Fireworks report: We made $5K profit. We only carried over some sparklers and
other little things. Gratitude was expressed to Lion Bill and Lion Harold for
all of their efforts.
Lion Brian: During his cancer treatments, Lions Brian and Mary need help with
mowing. Lion Harold will handle it this week, and one member will take responsibility
during future weeks. Lion Brian might need some help driving to Scottsbluff
for his treatments.

Institute in Chicago next week.
Lion Vicki revisited a request for glaucoma surgery. The hospital administrator
in Chadron will send a charity care form to the individual. She has been told
that the clinic cancelled her surgery because we haven’t given them the
money. She indicated she would pay for it and we could reimburse her. Lions
Alan will send a $500 check to the clinic and try for our district and state
matches. LionVickie will follow up with the individual.
Lion Vicki reviewed a new request for assistance from an individual who just
moved to Alliance and wants us to pay a Chadron eye doctor. They want $89.95.
Application will be referred to the eyeglass committee.
Lion Earl gave advice on how to decide whom to marry.
Next week: brats and kraut.
Letter from NLF: asking for money to complete a diabetes education campaign
for medical professionals. Moved by Lion Alan and seconded by Lion Howard to
send $500. Motion carried.
Lion Kevin offered a resolution encouraging Lion Harry Schaffert to attend next

In light of the Legion’s current financial difficulities, Lion Earl asked

need someone else to be the timer. Lion Bill volunteered.
Secretary Wilkinson reported that Lion Marianna Groth fron Kingston, ID had
visited about a month ago and engaged in some pin trading with our club. Lion
Groth sent a thank-you letter, photos of her home, and pins from her club.
Secretary Wilkinson reported that honorary Lion Gus will have his surgery next
Wednesday and we’ll need a substitute secretary.

Lion Ron Fletcher gave an update on Gina Finnel, who had asked for assistance
several months ago. She needed surgery on both eyes. One eye has now been done,
payed for by the state. That has given her some sight, but an additional procedure
(some sort of injection) is needed. She now would like help from Lions to pay
for those injections.
The club judged the Hemingford Peace Posters. Winners were as follows: 1st,

Shopping spree was discussed. This year was about a break even. To be a useful
fund raiser, we need to either cut the time, sell more tickets, increase the
price or some combination of the above. To sell more tickets, we need locations
where people can stop plus phone numbers listed on the flyers in addition to
saying “get tickets from any Lion”.
Dobby’s open house will be on Sunday, Dec. 13th from 1-4 p.m., with tours
of all the building and a push to recruit members. Lions are responsible for
caring for the Saloon and its “upper room”. Some of the steps on
the outside stairway need replacing. Lions Harold and Bill volunteered to do
the repairs.
Proceeds from the 50-50 drawing were $5.50. Winner was Lion Vickie.
Lion Vickie shared a form she is had prepared for those requesting the club
assist with paying for Horspice. It was suggested that the additon of requestion
documentation if a physician was recommending the riding therapy as a treatment.
Lion Vickie will incorporate that change.
Lion Wally asked about rent for the road signs. He moved then that we charge
$15 per sign per location. Lion Alan seconded and the motion passed.
Lion Alan moved that we purchase signs (of about 30” in size) to be put
on the Bulldog Stadium Pressbox. Lion Wally seconded. The motion passed.

Lion Bill attended the Fall Rally in Hastings last weekend and said it was a
really good time.

Lion Earl entertained a discssion about whether we would like to be involved
in the Dobby’s Frontier Town project. There is an open house December

out there Saturday at 1:00 and help Earl decorate.

Lion Wilma offered a paid advertisement: The Box Butte Art Society is going

Lion Vickie reported that she has received the $750 matching funds chech from
the Nebraska Lions Foundation. It needs to be deposited in our activities account
and a check then sent to the Chadron Hospital.
Vickie, Joan, Laurie, & Bridget gave a presentation on After-prom 2010 (April
25th). They are planning on Comic/Magician Janene Harris for entertainment this
year. They will also have inflatable suits for sumo wrestling. Attendance last
year was about 200. They would like to give credit to the major donors with
posters, wall hangings, etc. They are asking for $2000 to help pay for the major
entertainment.
Lion Steve Benzel was the 50-50 winner.
Next week will be a presentation from the Alliance Horspice and the following
week from Habitat for Humanity.
Lion President Earl reported on decorating the Saloon at Dobby’s and asked

Point Horspice, related to their lottery funding request. They would like to
build four small pole barns for the horses at about $1200 each.

Fair” on Novembe 13, 2010.

Lion Jerry announced that the veteran’s cemetary has formed a committee
to plan the opening and dedication. There will be 2000 to 10,000 people attending.
The committee is asking for help. Meeting is March 22 at the Legion. The ceremony
will be on August 13, 2010. Moved by Lion Steve and seconded by Lion Sharron
to help. Motion amended and accepted to attend organizational meeting and find
out what is needed, then decide. Amendment carried.
Lion Guy suggested that we develop the capacity to have a concession trailer
since there are so many events that need this type of service. A short discussion
